40 for 40 Holly Jacobs

Holly Jacobs is  another friend I made on line through eHarlequin  - and then became a true friend when we met in person at RWA. She's someone who has always made a joke about the way I use the word 'lovely' - as you'll see from her post. But then, with Holly 'lovely' is an easy word to use. About her and her books - so here's my lovely  friend Holly.

Holly wanted to send  a photo of her and me together but couldn't find it. I said I'd post one. This is one of my favourite pictures ever of me (at the back) Holly (in front) and in the middle is our 'third twin' Donna Alward. (you'll meet Donna later in the celebrations.)

So here's Holly:

You all might know Steve as The Babe Magnet, but to me, Kate and Steve are 'my lovely friends.'

When I wrote my June book, A Walk Down the Aisle, it was about the 'perfect' couple.  Everyone in Valley Ridge thought of them that way.  But it turned out they had their imperfections...but they learn that those imperfections helped make them who they are.  And who they are is two people who are meant to be together.  Two people who might not be perfect, but fit perfectly.  That's how I think of Steve and Kate
...two people who fit with 'lovely' perfection.

And Kate and Steve, Happy, Happy Anniversary!

So, in order to celebrate their anniversary, I'm giving away my new trilogy...which includes A Walk Down the Aisle.

Okay, question...:

My husband occasionally sends me flowers, and when something that needs celebrating happens, he'll take me out for a Guinness.  But really, the gestures that mean the most to me are the small ones.

For instance, he doesn't think beds need to be made in the morning...and I do.  So, on days he makes the bed, I know he did it just to please me.  I know, it sounds silly*, but I look at that bed all neatly made and feel loved.

And I love leaves on the ground in the fall...he doesn't.  So, when I rake the lawn for him, I'm saying the same thing...I love you.

So, what small gestures have ever touched you personally, or did you read in a book and think..."ahhh, now that's love"?

Answers in the comments section please .  We'll draw a random entry!

Again, Happy Anniversary to one of the loveliest couples I know!
Holly

PS from Kate - *Doesn't sound silly to me at all, Holly. In fact it sounds just lovely!
Holly and her husband celebrated their 30th anniversary last week - belated Congratulations to you both, Holly!  I hope you had a lovely day.

You can find out more about Holly on her web site.  Her newest title is a departure from her romance stories - as you can see from the cover above.  STEAMED: A Maid in LA Mystery  -Cleaning is Murder on the Manicure - is available Summer 2013 for Kindle

A Special Day

I have some more posts about Conflict coming up but I'm pretty busy today with something special to celebrate . Two special things really. Two special birthdays.

One I'm a bit late - a day late - with so I have to say sorry to my lovely 'twin' Holly Jacobs for that. Holly's birthday was yesterday. So Happy Birthday for yesterday Holly! I hope you had a very special day.

And today's birthday? Well that's really special - to me anyway.

Some years ago (quite a few of them!) in Leeds, West Yorkshire, a baby boy was born who was destined to become my own real life hero. I had to go to Aberystwyth in Wales to meet him, in spite of the fact that while he was growing up in Leeds, I was only 20 or so miles away in Halifax. But destiny knew what she was doing and it all worked out as a HEA in the end.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABE MAGNET and here's to many many more of them!

It doesn't seem right somehow to be talking about Conflict today though, so if you're looking for Conflict posts then come back tomorrow. We're off out into the sunshine for the day to celebrate. And then dinner tonight with The Offspring and his Lovely Girlfriend.

But on a small intriguing coincidence thought - Holly's birthday is August 8th, the Babe Magnet 's birthday is today - August 9th. And when I was at school my best friend then was born on August 8th too. There must be some special connection between me and these dates at this time of year.

So Josephine West - if you're out there - Happy Birthday too!

My First/Favourite Kate Walker - Holly Jacobs - and some lovely news

A while back, I posted Donna Alward's choice of her 5 favourite Kate Walker novels. Today I'm posting my 'Third Twin' lovely Holly Jacobs' special choices.

Third twin? You've never heard of three twins? Believe me, it happens. Holly and I first 'met' over on the eHarlequin message boards. And we became so close so fast that very soon realised that we were obviously twins separated at birth. Meeting up at RWA Denver only confirmed that suspicion.

Then a couple of years ago, again on those message boards, I met Donna Alward, and we met up in person in London when she came over just after having her first book accepted. When Holly, Donna and I connected on the message boards we realised that there were in fact three of us 'twins' and we made a date to meet up all together in Washington. Which is where the photo of the 'Three Twins' (with me in white, Holly in the black jacket and Donna in the middle) was taken.

So naturally when I was planning this series of 'My Top 5' Kate Walkers, I had to ask my twin Holly. and here's what she has to say -

Wow, my first Kate Walker? I'm not sure. I think it was The Sicilian's Wife (2002), but I might be wrong, but even if I am, it's one that stands out for me!

And picking my favorites of KW's books is tough, but I'd have to pick the Alcolars, which makes three. (The Twelve Month Mistress, The Spaniard's Inconvenient Wife, Bound By Blackmail)
And of course The Sicilian's Wife--four.
And The Italian's Forced Bride!

Holly's latest book A One-of-A-Kind-Family is out in America in Super Romance on February 9th. And it's a very special read. I should know - it's right beside my bed, tempting me away from the book I'm supposed to be writing. I made the mistake of opening it, just to read the opening page . . . It has Holly's trademark of warm characters and strong emotional storyline. Now if I could just finish this Sicilian and get back to it!

For me, I will always connect Rafael's Love-Child with meeting Holly because it was with that book that I first ventured on to the message boards and Holly was one of the first to welcome me. Thanks so much twin!

You can read more about Holly on her web page or you can find her blogging on eHarlequin.
And I have a special reason for thanking Holly today because she has helped me with my really great news.
The new issue of Romantic Times Book Reviews appeared on the internet yesterday and I was thrilled to discover that my Presents EXTRA title The Konstantos Marriage Demand had been awarded 4.5 stars - and was one of the series Top Picks for March.
I'm really thrilled by this - I spent 20 + years of my 25 published ones without a single RT Top Pick and now in just over a year, I have two of them. The other was for Bedded By The Greek Billionaire. There must be something about those Greeks!

Thanks to Holly, who could get it from the RT web site, I can also bring you the review - and it's fabulous!

THE KONSTANTOS MARRIAGE DEMAND (4.5) by Kate Walker: As far as Nikos Konstantos is concerned, Sadie used him, humiliated him and then walked out on him -- on what was to be their wedding day no less. Five years later, the tables have been turned. A penniless Sadie has her work cut out for when she approaches Nikos to save her family home. Nikos intends to exact retribution against the woman he still lusts after, but where does his mysterious new bride fit into his plans? Misunderstandings and family betrayals propel this terrifically well-paced and fiery romance to its very rewarding conclusion. —Sabrina Madan
So I'm starting today with a very big smile on my face

Celebrating

Thank you so much to everyone who left Get Well messages or sent them privately. The weekend wasn't a lot of fun but by yesterday at least the symptoms were starting to ease.

And then I got some great news that really brightened my day. In fact, if I had enought voice I'd be cheering and singing. As it is, I've been doing the Snoopy dance of joy and smiling a lot.

Because yesterday I discovered on the Romantic Times web site that not only have they give Bedded By The Greek Billionaire 4 1/2 stars but they have also made it one of their Top Picks for November.

I am so thrilled by this. In fact I've achieved a long-held ambition. A l-o-n-g held ambition.

I've had some good reviews from RT, generally pretty respectable. And The Twelve Month Mistress was short-listed for Best Presents in 2005 but I've never achieved that elusive Top Pick for the month.

Now I've finally manged it and Bedded By The Greek Billionaire had a wonderful review as well. The reviews aren't up on the RT site yet, but my lovely friend Holly Jacobs (who got 4.5 stars herself with her fabulous Same Time Next Summer in August ) subscribes to the magazine and she was able to find the review and send it on to me so I can share it with you. (Thanks Hall!)

Seven years after he left in disgrace, Angelos Rousakis is back in London. He'd been attracted to Jessica Marshall but knew she was too young. But she wouldn't leave him alone and when her stepfather found them in what seemed to be a compromising position, Jessica placed the blame on him. Now Jessica's stepfather has died and she learns Angelos is now the owner of the estate. When Angelos sees Jessica he expects to feel triumphant but now wonders if his hate isn't masking something else. Kate Walker's Bedded by the Greek Billionaire (4.5) is a delicious melodrama full of dizzying emotions as the reader goes along with the highs and lows as this couple finds each other again. —Sandra Garcia-Myers

Great isn't it? Thank you RT - and Sandra Garcia Myers - this news has just made my week.

What I did at the Conference - a San Francisco photo diary

So if a picture speaks a thousand words - here's a whole book full of what I got up to at the RWA Conference in San Francisco -

On our first morning there - very early on a grey morning! - we went to Alcatraz island so that the BM could do his research of the trip.

We shared the trip with the fabulous Sue Stephens and her beautiful daughters. Sue orgainsed the tickets for us so all we had to do was to turn up. Thanks so much Sue! Even if it did mean getting out of bed for a 7.30 start!

The next day official registration started and I started to meet up with more of my fellow authors. Here's Susan Stephens again and Irish Presents author, Abby Green

I also got to meet lovely Lee Hyat for the very first time - though we had known each other and have been in contact through emails for over 8 year! Lee runs the brilliant Author Sound Relations and has been so helpful to me with publicity and running my contests in America.

Later that day lovely Jane Porter hosted a special afternoon tea for her fellow Presents authors. Here's Sandra Marton with one of our newest published authors - Jennie Lucas

And here's a group photo of all the authors at the tea. This pic was taken by the waiter. Left to right - Sandra Marton, Susan Stephens, Carole Mortimer, Jacqueline Baird, Abby Green. Me

in front - Jane Porter, Jennie Lucas, Sharon Kendrick and Trish Morey.

That afternoon was the Literacy Signing in the ballroom - the pic on the left is just a tiny bit of the queue of readers ready to buy signed books and on the right I'm at the signing with fellow northern Brit, erotic romance author Saskia Walker who was sitting next to me. The whole event raised thousands of dollars for literacy charities.

After the signing Sandra Marton hosted her traditional authors' pizza party in her room where we all ate pizza, drank wine and talked and talked and talked.

Thursday started with a Focus Group to discuss Harlequin's marketing and new ideas after which we all grabbed taxis and headed out to Tal y Tara for tea with the Mills and Boon Editors.

Here are - left to right Jennie Lucas, Abby Green (behind) Trish Wylie Senior Editor Linda Fildew (standing) and seated editor Lucy Gilmour.

I spent the afternoon with two of my favourite Presents authors, brilliant Sandra Marton and fabulous Aussie Trish Morey. (One of the very best reasons for going to RWA is because I get a chance to meet up with friends from the other side of the world.) Here's a pic of Trish at the Lit Signing.

And one of Sandra enjoying the sunshie in Union Square - while we - you guessed it - talked and talked about writing and books and heroes . . . .
Sandra was given an award for her 75th book at this conference - congratulations again Sandra!

Thursday night is the traditional eHarlequin Pajama Party and here's the gang at the event.

At the party prizes are given for best PJs and I actually won Most Resplendent Pajamas (My thanks have to go to t
he Babe Magnet who bought the beautiful silk gown I'm wearing)

And here I am with two of my very favourite people - Danica aka Dream one of the hosts on eHarlequin and Anna Louise Lucia who was of course sporting her first sale ribbon at this conference.

Friday I managed to spend some time with my lovely friend Holly Jacobs while we discussed the differences of the English language as used in the UK and America and so Holly started the great 'knackered debate' that you can see here.

In the evening it was the big Harlequin Party and here I am at the event with two special friends from the Struggling Writers on eHarlequin - Christyne and Trish (Congratulations on that sale Christyne!)

And here's the wonderful Jayne who manages so much of what goes on on the eHarlequin Community message boards.

Finally, to round of a fantastic visit to San Francisco we spent a day in the lovely company of special friends Anne McAllister and her husband The Prof. Both the Prof and the Babe Magnet seem to save up all their talking until they get together so they talked and Anne and I talked - on cable cars, over lunch at Fisherman's Wharf, or - as pictured here - at the Top of the Mark where we could see all of the city spread out below us.

And if you want to know what else the Babe Magnet got up to in San Francisco . . . well - all I can say is watch out for the Pink Heart Society Blog next monday August 18th!

12 Point Guide 2 Launch Party 4

I'm dashing today because I'm setting off for London, literally any minute.
This afternoon I'll be at the London Book Fair for the real launch party for 12PGTWR2, but I'll leave you with some really wonderful guests who will chat with you and I'm sure you won't miss me.

My apologies to the people who have sent in questions for the Writers' Q&A which has been rather pushed to the side in the chaos that has been my life this past week or so. I have not forgotten you and I still plan on answering the questions just as soon as I get back from London and can breathe again.

So watch this space.

And when I get back I will have winners to annouce as well.
So I'll see you Thursday and in the meantime, enjoy meeting today's guests.

The first of these is Holly Jacobs who says:
Kate Walker's book is a must-have for any writer's bookshelf. It's clear, concise, informative!! Okay, so when I say things like that you might think I'm biased since I think Kate's one of the loveliest ladies around, but my copy of the book is on my reference shelf, within arm's reach of my desk! Congrats, Kate!
Holly's prize:
The winner can pick a book from my backlist (although there are a few that I'm now out of, I have copies of most.)
Holly's next book out is Same Time Next Summer, SuperRomance, in August.

I don't yet have a cover for Same Time Next Summer, but the lovely House on Briar Hill Road is still around on Amazon. And you can read more about Holly's books on her web site

My next guest is a lovely author from Australia - Ally Blake who writes for both the Modern Heat and Romance lines. Welcome Ally!

Ally says:

The second edition is here! The second edition is here! For anyone out there who does not have a copy of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance, run, don't walk, down to your local bookshop and buy one now. And I just ain't saying that, Kate, because you sooooo kindly asked me to be involved ;). When our published members of the Pink Heart Society get together to say which book helped them most on their journey to becoming a romance author, your wonderful book comes up trumps time and time again. And if that ain't a stamp of approval I don't know what is. A big fat humungous congrats on the release of the second edition and here's to it helping spawn a new generation of romance authors for us all to fall in love with!

Ally's next Modern Heat novel The Magnate's Indecent Proposal hits UK bookshelves in May . You can find her at her website.

Now I'd like you to say hello to Nicola Cornick who writes such fabulous historical novels.

Nicola says:
It's been great to be able to recommend The Twelve Point Guide to lots of aspiring authors who have contacted me for writing advice and I'm thrilled to know that I've been able to make a small contribution to the new book. Thank you, Kate, and I wish the book every success. When it comes to good, practical advice for would-be authors the 12 Point Guide is the best!"
Nicola's next book is The Last Rake in London - May 2008 from Mills & Boon Historicals and June 2008 from Harlequin Historicals

Nicola's Prize:
I'd love to offer a copy of The Last Rake in London as a prize
Nicola's question is:
Which historical period would you like to have been born in?
(Answer in the comments as usual please)
You can find more about Nicola on her website.
And last but not least is Presents auhtor Abby Green .
Here's what Abby has to say:
HUGE congratulations to Kate on this occasion, the launch of the second edition of her world famous 12 point guide to writing romance. It helped me along my way and then I was lucky enough to meet Kate and get her to sign my copy, and I've subsequently ordered it and also lent my own precious copy to various other aspiring authors. No doubt it's featuring right now in someone else's path to publication and the new edition will be even more fabulous than the last one. Even more encouraging. Even more inspirational and even more jam packed with helpful advice and exercises. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into it Kate...x Abby Green

Abby's next next book out is The Mediterranean Billionaire's Blackmail Bargain in July

You can read more about Abby and her books on her website
And don;t forget that all these fabulous authors are partying with me because they contributed to 12PGTWR2 by offering thier own personal tips and advice on writing romance in general and the lines they write for in particular.

Keep commenting for a chance to win - and I'll be back before you know it!

Christmas Stocking Contest - Final Book details

It's a bright and crisp day here - but very cold. I've been out putting suet blocks on the bird table and soaking mealworms to feed the young robin who has visited several times.

It's beautiful and bearable - but I've been thinking of friends and readers in America who are suffering much much worse conditions in the ice storms sweeping the country. Take care and I hope you and your families keep safe and warm.

So today I have the last few books from the Christmas Stocking to tell you about.

First up is one of two titles by a lovely friend and writer, whose name is very appropriate for this seasonal contest - and that's Holly Jacobs. Holly sent me two titles - one a trilogy that she shares with Sherryl Woods and Darlene Gardener called Dashing Through the Mall. Holly's story in this volume is Deck The Halls.

The other book is Confessions of a Party Crasher -
Sneaking in is the easy part. But living it down is tough.
One corporate pink slip, and Morgan Miller is back in Pittsburgh bunking next to her mother. But when Morgan agrees to attend a posh wedding reception for fabulous 'Penny and Sam', she's appalled to learn her invitation is far from legitimate.

Though her friends agree that party crashing is a superlative way to meet men, Morgan's life is becoming completely unmanageable. Wedding photographer Conner Danning keeps shooting her swoon-worthy glances and Morgan's ex is trying to de-ex himself.

She can't wait to run home to SanDiego, but maybe living life as an 'unofficial guest' is better than no invite at all!

Holly's great book The House on Briar Hill Road (you might have read about it over on the Pink Heart Society Blog) is still available working on Amazon and eHarlequin, she's working on "my second book for my new American series " ...coming up is Everything But a Groom, Avalon Books, 12/08.

Tessa Radley's book on offer in the stocking is her June 07 Desire release Rich Man's Revenge:

He'd make her pay . . .
Hell-bent on revenge, Italian businessman Rico D'Alessio would stop at nothing to destroy the Sinclair family. Taking eldest daughter, Danielle Sinclair as his bride was a start. Making her pregnant with his heir would prove the ultimate payback. But falling for his bride of revenge? Even this most cunning of rich men had not counted on that turn of events or the secrets such a shocking union would reveal.
Tessa's current book, The Desert Bride of Al-Zayed was released in Novemer, and coming up in February 2008 is Pride and A Pregnancy Secret.
Finally, there is my own contribution to the stocking - the Mills & Boon Christmas Annual which contains a print copy of my internet story Wife For Real.

Wife for Real is the story of Alex Alcolar, the first of the Alcolar brothers, and this story started off the trilogy The Alcolar Family. This story hasn't been in print in the UK before and so hasn't been easy to find for readers who wanted to complete there collection of Alcolar Family stories.

But if you're able to download ebooks from the eHarlequin site, then it can be found there as well and it only costs $0.99. You can find it here if you're looking for it.

So that's it - all the books on offer this year! there are 12 of them - a book and great reading for each of the 12 Days of Christmas.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to go to the Contests page of my web site, answer the easy question you'll find there - and send your answer to me with the heading Christmas Stocking Contest in the subject line of the email.

You have 6 days left. On the 18th December, I'll get Sid the Cat to pick the two names from all the entries and two lucky people will have all these books sent to them as a special Christmas present.

But you have to be in it to win it - so get your entries in now.

Good luck!

This and that

Today, in my role as a Pink Heart Society Columnist , I have a post over on their blog. This one's for Film on Friday and reading through it makes me want to go and get the DVD of the film I've chosen and watch it all over again. It's an oldie but goodie.
What film have I chosen? Ah well, you'll have to go over to the PHS and see.

And while you're there, don't forget to go on the Treasure Hunt and find all the gifts being given to the Little Pink Dancing Guy for his birthday so you can be in the running for the great big prize hamper at the end of the month.

Other things - two special friends of mine are busy on the eHarlequin web site this week -
Julie Cohen is running a Q&A on Tightening up the First Page - lots of great advice so if you're wanting to learn, head over there at once!

And my lovely friend Holly Jacobs has a Weekly on -line Read - The Moments on eHarlequin too.

This is a rather special story for Holly. A mulit-award-winning author, she has always been known for her wonderful light touch in writing romance with a twist of humour in it - first for Flipside, then for Silhouette Romance - but her books have always had a poignancy about them that has never been fully developed. This is all going to change with the publication of her current book - The House on Briar Hill Road.
The House on Briar Hill Road is Holly's first title out in the Harlequin Everlasting Love line and it's a book that's very close to her heart. And it's wonderful, poignant story. A story with real heart. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it wins Holly another - well deserved - award.

Holly has sent me some books to put into the Christmas (there's that word again!) Stocking Stuffed with Books - actually they were supposed to go into the Beach Bag Full of Books prize stash but as I've already explained, that contest had to give way this year to the Great Big Blog Party. She sent me a copy of Briar Hill Road then so I got a sneak preview. But I couldn't wait until December to talk about her new book as that might mean you'd miss it because it's out in October - or if you can't wait it's up on the eHarlequin site already.
And talking of great books - I haven't had much time for reading these days - a certain combination of Greek and a deadline and a whip cracking editor - but I did read Liz Fielding's fabulous Reunited: Marriage in A Million. And all I can say is it's another Liz Fielding classic. Considering the horrible day Monday was, a book that can keep my attention and distract and comfort me at that time has to have something special about it. Lovely book, Liz - thank you so much! The only problem is that it's one of a trilogy and now I'm going to have to find out what happens to Simone and Claire . . . Just what I don't need - more books for the TBR mountain.
And talking of that mountain, the next one off it is India Grey's debut novel The Italian's Defiant Mistress which is also out in October - this time in Presents. But I also have Anne McAllister's The Boss's Wife For A Week offering me temptation, and having met Spence and Sadie through Anne's blog, that's a temptation I'm struggling to resist.
But first I have to get back to Angelos and Jessica.

Great Big Blog Party 2 - Holly Jacobs

I'm posting these guest blogs in the order that their authors got them to me - so that way you'll be able to see who's quick off the mark with their contribution and who had to be reminded a little.

So today's guest is a lovely lady (she'd expect me to use that adjective and probably wouldn't believe it was me if I didn't) called Holly Jacobs. I met Holly through the eHarlequin message boards, was lucky enough to meet her in person in Denver and then in New York.

Holly has a very special book coming out in October called The House on Briar Hill Road and I'll be blogging more about that nearer the time. But for today, here's Holly herself -

Things I Like About Fifty

Fifty is a lovely number. What’s so great about fifty?

Well, rumor (and Paul Simon) has it there are fifty ways to leave your lover.

For you math geeks, fifty is the seventh square prime.

For the science geeks, it’s the atomic number of tin, and in physics it’s a ‘magic’ number.

In Kabbalah there are fifty gates of wisdom.

Hawaii is the US’s fiftieth state. And speaking of romantic destinations, Hawaii has to be one of the best.

If you’re into Roman numerals, 50 is written as L.

Roman...Romance....L...Love....okay, it’s a stretch, but in romance, fifty is the number of books one of my favorite authors, Kate Walker, has written. That’s what we’re here celebrating.

Fifty books...that’s so impressive. It’s a golden anniversary. And our Kate is certainly a golden author whose books never fail to move readers. Paul Simon spoke about the fifty ways to leave a lover...well, Kate’s lovers (uh, these are her fictional characters, not her real life lovers–her husband doesn’t allow her any of real kind, but hey, with a husband as sweet as he is, who’d want them anyway? ) may leave, but they always come back and though their road is rocky, they find true love. And as a reader, that’s what I’ve found...a true love of Kate’s books. She’s an amazing and gifted writer, and an even more amazing and gifted woman!

Yes, fifty is a great number...and one of the greatest things about it is Kate Walker’s fifty books!

Congratulations, Kate! Invite me back when you’ve finished that next fifty. I’m already thinking of cool things about 100!

Speaking of 100...as an anniversary gift to Kate (well, really to you, her readers), I’m giving away one of my backlist books...The 100-Year Itch, which was a book celebrating Harlequin Duet’s 100th release. It seems like the appropriate give-away in honor of Kate’s next big anniversary!

Happy anniversary, Kate!
