A Winner at Last

My apologies for being missing for going missing for a while - life can do that to you sometimes.

Writers' Holiday at Fishguard, preparing for some more courses coming up - details to follow -  revisions - all take up time when I was already too bust dealing with stuff to breathe . ..

So I'm late coming to announce the winner of the copy of Julie Cohen's lovely  book Dear Thing.

But to remedy that now -  Charlie the Maine Coon has forgiven me for  going away - twice!  - and has now condescended to pick a winner and his choice is:

Nova!

So Nova, please  would  you contact me and let me know your mailing address and I'll get the book into the mail to you.

Thank you to everyone else who commented  - and a special thank you to Julie herself for answering all my questions so fully and interestingly.

Advent Calendar Day 22

It's raining - again!

I just opened the door to let in the cats after their early morning dash outside and they were SO happy to be let back in. They are soaked to the skin and Charlie is leaving wet footprints wherever he goes.  He was also so hungry, so he's happy  and more than ready to pick a winner for the latest giveaway.

So he has picked a name - and the name he has picked is Chey.

Chey wins a copy of  The Good Greek Wife.

Chey please send me your postal address and I'll get your prize in the mail to you.

Today's  giveaway is to win a copy of The Greek Tycoon's Unwilling Wife. This book came out in 2007

He thought she was his mistress . . .
Recuperating on his private Greek island after a car crash, Andreas Petrakos had no memory of the previous year. The last thing he remembered was his passionate affair with beautiful Rebecca Ainsworth.
. . . when actually she was his wife!
Becca returned to the island because Andreas had asked for her. But she had to hide the truth from him. So what would happen when he recalled throwing Becca out - on their wedding day - for a reason only he knew?

And today's question is - well, I think it's time we looked at  some special treats coming up seeing as Christmas is nearly here. So  I'd like you to tell me about what you're lookiung forward to eating and drinking over the holidays.

Yes, I know there's the traditional Christmas dinner -  but what else do you have as as real treat while you're relaxing and enjoying yourselves  over Christmas?

Do you love mince pies - and  do you have them cold or warm? With cream ?  Ice cream?
Egg nog or perhaps some mulled wine?
Are you like my  DH who loves nuts  and actually enjoys cracking them and picking them out of the shells himself?  (I love nuts  - but I prefer it when someone else  has done the work!)
Do you buy in lots of chocolates and sweet things - or do you prefer the savouries like crisps,  cheeses,  spicy things?

I have to admit that I don't enjoy the dried fruit mixtures that are so much a tradion  at this time of year - so I don't have a single mince pie, Christmas cake - or even a Christmas pudding  - in the house.  But I do have homemade shaortbread and oaty cookies  made with golden syrup.   There will be cheesy biscuits too - and lots of different cheeses  with chutney and pickles. Those are always part of  our  meal on Christmas Eve - lots of variety and taste, but little cooking!

Oh and of c ourse there ios a bag of special treats for the cats - tasty dinners and some bags  of catnip to drive them crazy with delight in front of the fire!

So tell me the special treats in food or drink that you enjoy and your name will go into the prize draw for the giveaway book.

And now I must go and get dressed - and DH and I will be heading out for our traditional Saturday morning  - it might be nearly Christmas but  we still have a large coffee and the cryptic crossword puzzle  waiting for us.  WE've completed it every week  for 5 months now - we can't let it beat us before Christmas!

Janet Laurence's Winner!

I have a winner to announce  -  one lucky commenter has won a copy of Janet laurence's Deadly Inheritance.

And the winner  is -

Princess Fiona with her comment about Poirot -

But for purity of purpose, the one person who could never be swayed by anything but the truth, I would have to say Poirot. His simple statement "I do not approve of murder" may seem trite but it covers a philosophy that is proven in book after book that murder not only destroys the victim but the soul of the murderer.

Congratulations, Fiona - please send me your postal address so  I can send it on to Janet.
Oh - and Janet asks me to tell you that Deadly Inheritance is now available on Kindle  so it's a quick and easy download  for anyone.

This is  a little late but I just received this great review for The Devil and Miss Jones from Julie at Cataromance so, as it made me feel like a winner too, I thought  I'd share with you -

Kate Walker continues to affirm her standing as one of category romance’s most talented stars with her sixtieth novel for Harlequin Presents: The Devil and Miss Jones.

Martha Jones has spent months planning her dream wedding. Having spared no expense to make all of her dreams a reality, Martha had been looking forward to walking down the aisle towards her Prince Charming and spending the rest of her life living happily ever after. However, Martha’s hopes and dreams were dashed by devastating lies and cruel deceit. Just moments before her ceremony, Martha had overheard her husband to be admitting to her bridesmaid that he was in love with her and that he was only marrying Martha for her money. With her pride in tatters and humiliated beyond belief, a broken-hearted Martha had decided to flee the ceremony and to seek sanctuary elsewhere. With no car or money, Martha had stood on the side of the road and hoped that a kind stranger would take pity on her and take her away from this nightmare. But Martha hadn’t anticipated that her knight errant would be a devilishly attractive man who called himself Diablo…
Tall, dark and handsome Diablo does not look like the sort of man Martha usually runs into in the streets of her small Yorkshire town. Even though she doesn’t know anything about him, Martha finds herself drawn to her enigmatic rescuer, and when she is taken to safety by Diablo, she finds herself acting on her attraction towards her brooding savior and giving in to the desire that sizzles between them. Martha is well aware that their night of love can never be repeated, but she is unable to resist Diablo’s tempting kisses and tantalizing caresses…

Carlos Ortega had learned from a very young age to keep his heart under lock and key. Used to giving emotions and relationships a very wide berth, Carlos had surprised himself when he had found himself stopping by the side of the road and giving a vulnerable Martha a lift back to safety. Passion had flared from the very first moment they laid eyes on one another, but Carlos has neither the time nor the inclination for a relationships. Many months had passed since that fateful night, but Carlos cannot forget the beautiful woman who had stolen his heart…

But when fate pushes the two of them together again, Carlos gets the shock of his life when Martha tells him about the repercussions of their night of passion…

Passionate, provocative and absolutely impossible to put down, The Devil and Miss Jones is another classic tale of searing emotions, powerful drama and heart-stopping romance by the consistently wonderful Kate Walker! Written straight from the heart and guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats, The Devil and Miss Jones is a spellbinding romance that pits a courageous and resilient heroine against a wickedly saturnine Alpha hero Harlequin Presents readers will simply adore.

A first-rate contemporary romance from a true mistress of the genre, The Devil and Miss Jones is the latest mesmerizing page-turner by Kate Walker

Thank you so much Julie!
If you missed The Devil and Miss Jones when it was out in the UK  in March or America in April - or even Australia in  the  Mothers' Day pack  - it's still availble on the M&B site in UK and Australia,  the Harlequin site, and of course in ebook form.

Great Big Blog Party #45 and #54 Winners

As promised, I have a couple more prize winners to announce.

First of all, did you think that Katie Fforde had got lost? Well - she was lost in the throes of writing a love scene and then she had to go to Ireland and she's only just got back. But she didn't forget the prize and so a signed copy of Paradise Fields goes to

Ray-Anne

Congratulations Ray-Anne!

And the second prize announcement if for Lee Hyat's prize. Lee offered a My Tote Bag Goddie package - with some great Presents titles in it. And now that we have some more cat crunchies in stock - much to Sid's relief - Sid the Cat of Superior Breeding has been able to pick a winner .

And the winner of Lee Hyat's prize is:

Olivia

Olivia described her favourite cover - which happens to be one of my favourites too - in just the way I might have described it.

Without a doubt, my favorite cover is The Italian's Forced Bride. There is no picturesque landscape as background. There are no fabulous diamonds adorning the heroine and nor is she in a flamboyant gown. But what strikes me is the intensity of the emotions of the characters as can be deduced from their body language . The hero pulling the heroine closer to him with subtle pressure. The heroine resting her hand on the hero's lower back. And the utterly sublime and anticipative expressions on them both. This cover always draws me back to re-read this story.

And this gives me an excuse to show this cover again. I think it looks particularly fantastic on the cover of the Spanish edition, where you can see so much more of the picture that Olivia has described.

Winners- please email me with your postal address details so that I can organise your prizes.

Great Big Blog Party #52 and #53 Winners - and of course Sid

I'm late posting today - that's because I've been doing my accounts (yeuch!) so I'm staggering in her with a frazzled brain and a blank mind - but the accounts are done!! And they've left the building so that my accountant has them all to play with - and I'm sure he'll enjoy the experience much more than I did.

It just made me think of that question - the one that people always ask me - 'How long does it take to write a book?'

The honest answer is 'I write 3 a year so that's one every four months - unless one of those months has an accounting date in it.'Then the darned accounts take up most of my time.
But they're done - I'm up to date even for part of next year! So I can relax a while. And I can celebrate by announcing some Great Big Blog Party winners.

Firstly, prizes from Samantha Storm and/or Chaoscat

She (they?) said:

I had a grand time hanging out at your blog. Loved reading all posts! Thanks for having me! And can't wait for your 100th book celebration!
Okay dokey I picked two winners:

Peggy - won a package with a four reads from the RJ book vault.

Sabrina - won a print copy of Eye of the Storm.
The winners can email me at chaoscat @ romance junkies .com with their snail mail addies

Peggy and Sabrina can you cc me in on your notes to Cat so that I know the prizes are sorted.
Thanks! And I hope everyone checked out Romance Junkies - it's a great site to visit and their Writing Contest always attracts a huge amount of interest.
And a second prize announcement from Anna Campbell (ably assisted by Sid the Cat)

Sid says he totally understands the way that creatures turn up at Samantha Storm's house - after all, that's the way he came to live here - I just opened the door and he walked in.

But when it comes to eating crunchies off a piece of paper with a name on it then the name was brownone and her turtle.

brownone will you email me with your postal address as Anna is at the Romance Writers of Australia Conference right now - so I'll collect your details and send them on to her.

Sid says he's never seen a turtle but of course all creatures listen when you talk to them! They just don't think you're talking very much sense unless you're saying how handsome and wonderful they are or announcing that very important moment of TEATIME!

Finally, on the post about Sid yesterday a sharp-eyed Rachel spotted something on my desk that had clearly been entertaining Sid and so in the Comments section she said:

Dear Kate,I think Sid is telling porkies. looking closely he's been up all night reading a very good book-just what is that intriguing pink book under his right paw?Rach

Well, Rach that book is a copy of Call Up The Storm by the late and great Jane Donnelly. I found 3 copies of her books when I visited Hay on Wye when I was in Wales. (More on that later) And as my friend Anne McAllister collects Jane's work, I picked them up in case she didn't already have copies of them.

But I was also going to post a scan of that cover on a blog that would follow on from our discussion of covers after lee's Guest Blog on that subject yesterday.

This is an example of that terrible moment When Covers Go Bad!

To me, the intense, passionate, Alpha hero looks like nothing so much as camp comedian Julian Clary right down to the head cocked slightly to one side - and I'm saying nothing about that yellow-brown suit!

Great Big Blog Party #51 - Winner

Another winner announcement -

This time the details come from Ally Blake who went the tried and tested routs of having a furry friend hel her pick out a winner of her prize.

Boy was this a hard pick. So many gorgeous men for me to google to make sure I was on the right track! So, as so many before me have, I had to turn to a four-legged friend for help. My miniature fox terrier, Squiffy, has an eye for good looking men ;). So.... the winner of my first ever sexy book, GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS, out now in Australia and New Zealand for those of you who missed out, goes to Lidia who was the first to suggest that George Clooney could be cast as a charming hero in my next book. Thanks Lidia!
Lidia please email Ally with your postal details so that she can organise your prize. And please cc me in on the post so I'll know that you've responded.
Now on to today's Guest Blogger who, like Ally is another Aussie

Great Big Blog Party #46 and #49 winners

So here are another couple of winners to announce

Firstly, Phillipa Ashley's prize - here's what Phillipa told me in her email:

It was difficult to choose from all the very romantic replies, but I settled on.:

diane said...
My hero is my fiance. We will be getting married end of next May. A romantic meal is always appealing and simply divine with the right ingredient. In other words, my fiance.

Could you please ask her whether she wants Decent Exposure or Wish You Were Here? There will be a slight delay with WYWH which isn't out until start of September.
Thanks again for letting me take part. It was great fun and although I didn't expect many replies, (being 'unknown' ), I was surprised and thrilled by the response.

And another winner - this time for Jenny Haddon - Sophie Weston's prize is:

KimW

So Diane and KimW please email me with your postal address details and I'll get your prizes sorted out.

Thank you to everyone who made Phillipa and Jenny(Sophie) so welcome

Great Big Blog Party #42 & #46 Winners

I've been having way too much fun here at Caerleon - with wonderful talks, Poetry Readings, socialising, eating a bit - drinking a very little bit of wine - meeting wonderful authors . . .

I've managed to grab a couple of them and get them to sign books so that I can offer them as a special Caerleon contribution to the Blog Party - so look out for that - probably at the weekend.

But first I have to hand out some prizes that some previous Guest Bloggers have picked.

I talked to lovely Iris Gower last night and showed her all the entries for her contest and she picked out a winner from here

Her winner is juliemt who wins a signed copy of Iris Gower's brand new paperback Act of Love

Congratulations julie! I have your signed copy in my bag to take home with me and post on to you as soon as I can.

And I've also heard from
Bernardine Kennedy who tells me that she has picked as her winner - Christyjan

Christyjan if you email Bernardine here
then she can sort out which book you want. Bernardine offered a signed copy of Old Scores or in October, a signed copy of Past Chances.
Please cc the email to me so I know it's all in hand

And I thin that Phillipa Ashley was not sure how ot announce her winner - if you'd like to email me Phillipa then I'll announce it and organise the details.

I'll be heading for home tomorrow so I'll be back on my own computer and can get things done more easily then.

But tonight is the very special Welsh Night with the Cwmbach Male Voice Choir - always a wonderful experience.

Great Big Blog Party #44 Winner

Hi from Malvern!

I'm halfway to Wales and as usual have stopped here for the day. We passed the signs of the floods on the way here - flooded fields all around Tewksbury. It looked dreadful. Everywhere was sodden and great pools of water stretched as fer as we could see. My heart went out to the poor people still stuck there and haing to cope with it all.

I'm writing this on my wireless laptop and it's all abit new to me so I'm hoping all will be well as I have a winners' announcement to make.

Yes - winners!

The lovely Day Leclaire has announced her winners and she is giving away three fabulous prizes.

So Scarlet - you have won a copy of The Royals Trilogy - lucky you! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did

And Day has two other prizes on off - a copy of either Old Flames New Sparks (NASCAR) or The Billionaire's Baby Negotiation.

And the two winners here are:

Bamabelle

and

Christina H

So ladies, please let Day know your snail mail details - send your address to Day@DayLeclaires.com - please cc your message to me so that I'll know you've claimed you prize even though I'm on the road!

Congratulations

Great Big Blog Party #41 - and # 43 - Winner - and a Kate bit about next week

I've heard from Anne Gracie that Hunkthighs and Shoulderman have chosen their winner

Troy Hunkthighs was very taken with a pome that talked about a lay in the hay - any idea of laying and hay gets his vote - but Clint wanted to go with pulling a name from his hat - and in the end, for fairness that's just what they did

So the winner of a copy of The Perfect Rake is Cherie J

Congratulations Cherie if you could send your details please. For speed you can send them direct to Anne and cc them to me to be sure

This is because for the next week or so I shall be on the move - going to Caerleon Writers' Holiday starting with driving to Malvern tomorrow. (Though with the rain still coming down we might be swimming!) . I'll be trying to log in every day if I possibly can and I hope I have all the blogs for the last few days of the Great Big Blog Party already lined up ready to post. But things can go wrong . . .

So if I miss a day, I apologise in advance and I'll make sure that I post all the guest bloggers as and when I can - and the collecting of addresses and sending them on to winners might bet a little delayed - but even if I can't keep as up to date as when I'm at home, everything will all be sorted out in the end - I promise!

Unless of course I end up trying to post from underwater in Wales

PS - I just heard from Amanda Grange - who was unfortunately away on holiday while her post was up . (Was it a very wet holiday Amanda?)

But now that she's back she has chosen a winner - here's the message she posted on the Comments section announcing her choice:

Thanks to everyone for dropping in! They're all great heroes, but I'm going to pick Anne McAllister as the winner because she reminded me about Max Ravenscar, one of my favourite Heyer heyeros! If you send me your snailmail details, Anne, at amanda_grange@hotmail.com, I'll put a signed copy of Mr Darcy's Diary in the post for you. Thanks to everyone for entering! Amanda

Congratulations Anne! I hope you enjoy reading Mr Darcy's Diary. I think we'd all love to know what was going on inside that particular hero's head!

Great Big Blog Party 40 - Winner

I have another winner to announce.

Nancy the Cat Slayer's cute dog Arrow has picked out some winners for Nancy's prize and here are the results:

Well, ideally Arrow would pick Liz Fielding because she, too, would like to go anywhere with Lindsay Davis.
Arrow's runner-up is Ilona because she would like to go anywhere with any writer so she could research all the great smells along the way (and any rabbits would be a definite bonus).
Good choices Arrow!
Liz - I don't know if there are any Kate Walker and Anne McAllister books you don't have! But I'll be in touch to discuss that.

And Ilona - I'll send you a list of the titles I have available for you to choose from.
Congratulations ladies.
There will be more Guest Blogs and more prizes coming up. The contests for Elizabeth Oldfield, Amanda Grange and Iris Gower are all still open - so post your comments now. And make sure you come back tomorrow when not only is there a wonderful Guest Blogger - but there's a real treat of a post from her for you all to read.
Call back on Monday to find out

Great Big Blog Party 37 Winner

I have visitors today - my friend Duck and her husband are home (briefly) from Dubai where she used to live and is having a short hiatus (that sounds painful) in Lincolnshire before leaving for pastures - well, streets at least - new in Spain.

So we're getting together, snatching our usual one day a year (if we're lucky) to catch up on the hugs and the talk and the news that we've missed in the past 12 months. Sadly, Duck comes home just as another friend Liz (Kate waves to Liz) is planning her move to Dubai or I could have introduced them. And two friends out there would have been even more incentive to visit. But they just missed each other by a month or so.

But today I will be busy - so I'm dashing in to post a quick winner announcement and hopefully have time for today's guest blog before I start making the coffee and trying to remember all I have to tell Duck.

So today's winner is for Jan Jones' contest.

Jan was roping her cats to help her choose the winner and . . .well, I'll let Jan tell the story . . .

Merlin was unavailable for crunchie duty this evening, so Archer had a sniff around and picked Donna as the winner. I was about to clear up the pieces of paper when Merlin came racing through the cat flap just as if a really scary quarter-his-size hedgehog had appeared from behind the wheelbarrow, and he immediately ate Ally's crunchie to calm himself down. So, I'd better announce two winners of Stage by Stage: Donna and Ally. And no, the hedgehog doesn't get to choose one as well!

So Donna and Ally - you know the drill.
And special thanks to Jan for adding an extra copy of Stage By Stage to the prize collection - the winners are in for a real treat.

(And Jan - please write another book so I can enjoy it too!!)

Oh yes - and a special addition from Sid - seeing as we posted a pic of Merlin on Jan's actual blog, but missed Archer - today I'm remedying the matter by including a photo of another handsome red and white feline who lives with Jan

Great Big Blog Party - More Winners

I'm back to annonce more winners - this time from Lesley Cookman and Susan Stephens . . .

So - Lesley first - here's her message . . .

I've picked Ruth, as she mentioned two detectiveswho are secondary characters in Elizabeth George's books, andyou'd have to be very familiar with the genre to know that.

Congratulations Ruth!

And Susan Stephns put this message on the comments section - so in case you haven;t spotted it -

Lois, you're the winner today, so huge congratulations. Could you send your snail mail details, please?susan@susanstephens.netThank you!Thank you all so much for dropping by Susanxx

Congratulations Lois as well.

Ladies you each win signed books - Lesley's Murder in Steeple Martin and Susan's current Presents - One-Night Baby. I hope you enjoy your prizes.

Great Big Blog Party 36 Winner

I have another winner to announce - this time for Marina Oliver's Giveaway Contest.

But first, Marina wasn't able to get in and join the comments so she's sent me her response to cut and paste here instead so - here's Marina's round-up - and her winner is named at the bottom:

Marina's Competition.

I was intrigued by how many of you said life would be uncomfortable in
past times, unless you were wealthy. That's more or less how I feel! I
want the fun and not the drudgery. In previous centuries I could have
died a couple of times without modern medicine. And I really would have
hated having to wear corsets!

I can recall the sheer hard work for my parents and grandparents in the
1940s, which is not that long ago - or I pretend it isn't! No washing
machines, so the weekly wash by hand took all of Monday, and then drying
and ironing most of Tuesday. No hot water laid on, it all had to be
boiled in a kettle on the fire, or for washday in a copper boiler.
Feather mattresses had to be turned and shaken every day. No vacuum
cleaners, rugs had to be taken outside and beaten. No fridges, so
shopping almost every day. Many men grew vegetables on allotments, and
kept a few chickens, even a pig, in the back garden. No central heating,
so fires to be lit and grates cleaned, even if they were not
black-leaded. Front doorsteps to be scrubbed. There were outside loos,
sometimes at the end of the garden. Either water to flush them had to be
carried in a bucket, or they were privies which had to be emptied
regularly. During WW2 frequent air raids meant lots of broken nights.

We now have a holiday cottage in Madeira, where they have all the modern
equipment, but in some ways it feels like the 1940s in England. There
are lots of small farms where we are, people give away surplus produce
to the neighbours (oh boy, don't bananas straight from the tree taste
scrumptious!) and they often keep a pig and a cow or goats as well as
chickens. At least we haven't been given one of those yet, but a friend
was presented with a chicken - for the pot or for eggs?

Some sort of time travel to visit would be better, I think, but without
that historical fiction is great. Why fiction rather than academic
history or biography? Those are all fascinating, and I read a lot both
for my research and out of interest. But biographers have to stick to
facts, while novelists can wander where they will, let their
imaginations run freely, inventing people and events within the real
framework, and often ignoring all the difficult aspects of life.

THE WINNER

So who's won my competition? It's been so difficult to choose, but by a
short head it has to be Alissa and the Edwardian era, with both the
carefree lifestyle but serious undertones of threatening war and the
suffrage movement. Many congratulations, and a hearty thank you to
everyone who sent in suggestions.

OK Alissa - you kno the drill - send me your mailing address and I'll pass the details on to Marina and she'll post out your prize. Congratulations!

Great Big Blog Party #33 & #34 Winners

More winners to annouce:

The first one is Biddy's winner - she sent me an email saying:

I have chosen Pearl because of her inspiration coming from the mountains and me being a big mountain fan!

And then there's the Hecks' choice - getting them all together to pick a winner wasn't easy. And then they all wanted to eat different cat crunchies so in the end I resorted to the tried and tested method of asking Sid.

I'd have loved to have given this prize to Biddy for the drunk on her doorstep - and the coterie of M&B authors who visit (I have personal experience of how wild they can be!) - but Sid has chosen
And Sid's choice is Ally Blake's Menagerie.
So Pearl and Ally please send me your smail mail adresses and I'll organise the prizes for you.
And I'll post today's guest blogger

Saturday, July 14, 2007

Great Big Blog Party 30something (31 I think I said!) Winner

So as I've completely lost count of what Guest Blog we are on - I'll just say that I have Dee Tenorio's winner
And I suspect - well I know - that Dee just wanted to be able to have an excuse to say this:
Christijan's "55 Year Old Ass" wins! (Sorry, it's worth an author copy just to be able to say that! LOL!) Just need her addy and I can get the book to her.
Congratulations Christyjan - you and your 55 year old ass have won. Please let me have your details so I can get the prize organised for you.

Great Big Blog Party 28 - Winner

Sometimes I wonder about my readers. I put up a post written by a cat - sorry - A Cat - and he gets one of the greatest responses of all my Guest Bloggers! 22 comments! OK, 2 of them were by Sid himself - but I knew he wasn;t going to stay quiet . And there was some d-o-g who got in there with the weather forecast! (Actually all d-o-g-s are welcome. Anne McAllister's Gunnar the Great has a large place in my heart, as does Mr Byron the Springer Spaniel of Norwich. And there is always young Uffa my sponsored guide dog pup.)

Anyway - Sid has offered me chocolate on pieces of paper to choose the winners. He has also tried sleeping on books. We found that he needed four books to sleep on and because two bits of paper were stuck together (sticky stuff chocolate - much stickier than cat crunchies!) there will be 2 prizes of 2 books each. One of my titles and one of Anne McAllister's)

And the winners are:

Lee Morrison

and

Joyce

Congratulations ladies - please send me you snail mail details. I shall be at the RNA Conference over the weekend but I'll get your prizes in the mail after that.
